Be The Legacy: Celebrating 10 Years of MPASA

The Genesis of a Movement: Where Our Story Began

The year 2014 marked a pivotal moment in the South African music industry. From a shared vision, an organisation was formed that would soon become a powerhouse in collecting mechanical royalties for composers, authors, and publishers across South Africa: Composers, Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO).

However, even as CAPASSO began its vital work, some of its visionary founders identified another crucial need. They saw a gap for a dedicated body whose sole purpose would be to champion the interests of music publishers, to support and strengthen the industry, and to serve as the unified voice of South African music publishers. This pressing need led to the reformation of the National Organisation for Reproduction Rights in Music in Southern Africa (NORM) to the Music Publishers’ Association of South Africa (MPASA), which we proudly call ourselves today.

A dark blue graphic with “Celebrating 10 Years of advocacy. Be The Legacy. A future of growth. 10 years strong!” in bold white text. Five event photos and the MPASA logo, with musical notes decorating the background, complete the design.

Planting the Seeds: One Year Onward

From 2015 onwards, our association rapidly grew from its small group of founding members into a dynamic collective, that included publishers independent to multinational. This diversity has always been our strength, fostering an environment where every voice contributes to our collective ambition.

Through the dedication of its members and the strategic implementation of key initiatives, MPASA has actively cultivated a more resilient music industry, empowering music publishers and building an enduring legacy as an association that champions the well-being of the creative industries.

A Decade of Defining Moments: MPASA’s Footprint

Standing at this 10-year milestone, we look back at a decade filled with impactful achievements, successful advocacy, and unwavering commitment. While we acknowledge there is still vital work ahead, MPASA’s journey thus far is a testament to what the collective can achieve.
