A Journey Rooted in Music and Family
In an interview with MPASA, Rorisang Sechele, a self-published musician, composer, and rising star, shared the inspiring story of her journey into the world of music. Growing up in a musical family, Rorisang’s home was always alive with melodies and rhythms that ignited her passion from an early age. Classically trained in and influenced by jazz during her studies at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Rorisang pursued an advanced diploma in music, determined to explore a fusion of styles she grew up hearing. Her love for RnB and soul music is evident in her compositions, showcasing her diverse influences.
Taking Control: The Power of Self-Publishing
Motivated by her ever-growing understanding of the music industry, Rorisang made the bold decision to take control of her music rights and publishing due to her strong desire to build something for herself as a female artist and businesswoman. Her determination to succeed on her terms serves as a beacon of inspiration for others in the industry. Rorisang is passionate about encouraging artists to educate themselves on music publishing, stating, “Information is available, and it’s the key to growth in this industry.”
Projects Close to Her Heart
Rorisang is particularly proud of her participation in the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band under the mentorship of Dr Nduduzo Makhathini. Her experience under the Incubator Programme with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, and the South African State Theatre not only honed her skill but also deepened her understanding of the business of music publishing. When asked to share advice with fellow artists, Rorisang emphasised the importance of self-empowerment:
- Learn about the industry and take personal responsibility for your success.
- Focus on the business side, not just the creation of music.
- Be unapologetic—bravery will take you where you need to go.
- Ask questions and share what you learn to uplift others.

In Full Bloom: What’s Next for Rorisang
Rorisang is entering 2025 with a series of exciting projects. She’s rolling out her debut EP, The Seed, which is the kicks off the first phase of the overarching project titled In Full Bloom. Her preview concert, held on December 7, 2024, at the South African State Theatre, marked the unveiling of this deeply personal project.
