You’ve probably heard a lot about artist and record company contracts and you may know a little about how they make money… but has music publishing crossed your radar? Music publishers are all about the songs that artists record and perform. Songwriters, composers, beatmakers and lyricists can sign to a music publisher. Music publishing is the engine-room of the music industry, where music comes to life from the minds of creative geniuses.

Think of the millions of songs streamed and broadcast per day! That all amounts to royalties for songwriters.

The Music Publishers’ Association of South Africa (MPA SA) launched the Music Publishing: Unlocked workshop series in May 2022 at the People’s Theatre in Johannesburg, and the theme was “Is there real money in music publishing?”. The networking was lively as scores of entrepreneurs, small music businesses, lawyers and broader industry players came to attend. Knowledge is power, and the MPA SA is powering up its members to be fearless, future-ready leaders in the African music publishing landscape.

Established industry leaders divided into burning topics and questions posed by the audience. In the panel discussion, Siya Metane from Slikour OnLife did not shy away from any elephants in the room, Nandi Mwepu from M4 Entertainment gave away some exclusive secrets and MOTI Africa founder, Munya Chanetsa imparted some critical information for emerging industry leaders in his characteristic and relatable style.

MPA SA Chair and industry expert, Ryan Hill facilitated discussions and delivered a presentation, with carefully tailored advice on where the money is at for music publishers and composers.
